New speaker agency charges no commissions... to launch speakers' careers

Never mind that the big speaker bureaus say you aren't famous or profitable enough for them... CommissionFreeSpeakers is an agency which helps new speakers gain visibility, recognition and income as professional speakers. Most new speakers can't command a fee high enough to give a bureau owner or agent a healthy commission. Most bureaus want to represent speakers who can charge $5,000 or more per engagement so the commission they receive is at least $1250 to $1500. If a speaker receives only $100 to 500 for an engagement, the agency at best would receive only $125 for up to 10 hours of work for that contract and would likely try to book a higher-priced speaker instead. But CommissionFreeSpeakers.com, owned by veteran speaker Andrea Reynolds, charges only a nominal annual membership fee to promote its roster of speakers monthly, and no commissions.

Why will this unconventional agency work? Andrea Reynolds wanted to give new speakers what they said they want. She posted a survey on her web site to find out what speakers think.

1. Most speakers don't like giving a chunk of their income (commission) to agents.
2. Some speakers don't like to ask for payment and would rather speak for what they are offered.
3. Speakers (wrongly) think their agent will ask for too much money and kill the deal for them.
4. Some speakers speak only to sell books and don't care if they make money speaking.
5. Many speakers need opportunities for speaking experience to build up a track record to begin to be paid.
6. Many speakers mistakenly believe an agent will go out and find them engagements.
7. Some speakers work for a non-profit organization and think it's wrong to accept more than an honorarium.
8. Some speakers prefer to speak only at bookstores and other book promotion events.
9. Many speakers think it's unnecessary to have a written contract.
10. Many speakers have a fear of financial success and of making considerable more money than their peers.

10 reasons why speakers will like this unconventional agency:

1. A speaker's entire investment is
$99 a year versus 25-30% of their speaking income.
2. Speakers each receive a full page speaker profile for a year with photos and all contact data.
3. Speakers receive promotion 12 times a year that could cost them, individually, $12,000 to $25,000 a year.
4. Speakers will have more confidence and prestige if they can say on their web site, "I'm represented by Andrea Reynolds' agency, Commission Free Speakers."
5. Every speaker-member may participate in the CFS private forum to learn more profitable ways to market themselves as speakers, specialists, consultants and columnists.
6. Speakers can charge whatever they like for speaking but may also speak for free if they choose.
7. Speakers may choose to accept merchandise or travel to exotic locations in lieu of payment.
8. Speakers may receive visibility and income in other ways from their profile on CommissionFreeSpeakers.com: press and media interviews, writing assignments, consulting assignments.
9. If a speaker does want CFS to negotiate bigger fees and better contracts (optional) there is a straight $200 fee (not a percentage) - no matter what the speaker's fee is - potentially saving a speaker at least $2,100 a year on twelve $1500 presentation contracts.
10. Every speaker on the roster has an equal chance to be booked (unlike through a speaker bureau.

6 reasons why meeting planners will like this unconventional agency:

3. Meeting planners can contact any speaker directly and not have to deal with any middlemen.
4. Meeting planners can still utilize the services of any bureau to seek out our speakers if they prefer.
5. Meeting planners can print out all the information they need to make a booking decision on one or two pages.
6. Meeting planners have full access (anonymously) to all speakers. No registration is required.
